Experience

Matakana has become one of Auckland’s favourite playgrounds catering for a diverse population sharing a taste for the good things in life. Matakana Village has been transformed into a historically sympathetic, architecturally acclaimed hub, hosting the legendary Matakana Market on Saturday morning and many other popular shops and amenities such as the exquisite boutique cinemas.

For foodies and wine connoisseurs, Matakana has much to offer. In the town there’s a great local wine bar, The Vintry. You can enjoy a more sophisticated meal at Tapianos or kick back for a superb Pizza at The Rusty Pelican. Local vineyards also offer great wine and food experiences, from the small boutique vineyards of Hyperion and Omaha Bay Vineyards to the larger Brick Bay, Ascension and Matakana Estate.

Matakana Coast also offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the Hauraki Gulf. Choose from Matheson Bay. Pakiri, Omaha or Tawharanui, with pristine sands and turquoise seas, it’s not hard to see why local and international visitors are so impressed with our coastline.

For those fortunate enough to own a boat, Matakana Coast is the gateway to Kawau Bay and the Hauraki Gulf. Dive for crayfish and scallops or fish for snapper and kingfish. If you don’t own a boat, there are many charter operators who will happily take you out, or alternatively rent a kayak to explore the coastline.

Goat Island Marine Reserve offers amazing snorkelling or diving – it’s like swimming in a magnificent coastal aquarium.

Other land based activities include 3 wonderful golf courses of Warkworth, Omaha and Wellsford, horse riding at the renowned Pakiri beach, and fun for the kids at RD6 which offers farm animals and playgrounds to enjoy.
